Situated just off the Roman Road in Linthorpe, Small Beans Coffee is small but mighty.
25-year-old owner, Danny Edgar is the face behind the brand. Initially training as a mechanic, but after finding work at Barbs Pizza, Danny decided to head back to Middlesbrough College and pursue a career in catering just two years ago.
“Being a mechanic didn’t really work out for me, and after gaining experience at Barbs Pizza and another restaurant in Hartlepool, I knew I wanted to up my game and retrain at college.
“I specialised in making my own fried chicken and hot sauces and was considering setting up a food van to tour across the country.
“However a year ago, I started to expand by knowledge and develop a real passion for coffee and that’s where the idea of opening a coffee shop in my hometown came from.” said Danny.
We visited the artisan coffee house on a sunny afternoon, where we were instantly met with a warm welcome from Danny who was taking a break from being the only chef in the kitchen.
As we browsed over the menu which is full of light breakfast and lunch dishes, Danny explained that he proudly makes his own jams, chutney and tomato sauces.
“We also have a selection of freshly made sweet treats available which are made daily by a friend – it’s really handy knowing someone who can bake a good cake.” laughs, Danny.
Suitable for all diets, the menu features plenty of vegan options, afternoon tea and kids favourites – All available to takeout.
Pooches are catered for too, as the coffee shop is dog friendly, where Danny plans to introduce a puppuccino for visiting pets.
And for an added bonus, the venue is seriously stylish with dark blue walls, wooden furniture and a bookcase brimming with novels.
Located in the former Tea Rooms venue, Danny thanks his partner and his dad, Mark for all their support and hard work of helping him to renovate the coffee shop from scratch.
Just from sitting down with Danny for half an hour, it was evident he has a real drive for developing his business.
“We’ve only just opened, but I already have big plans for the venue. I am looking to get my alcohol license soon to open up as a bottle shop on an evening.
“I really want to support local creatives too and host live events, everything from comedy improv nights to tarot reading sessions are on the agenda.” mentions, Danny.
The coffee shop also plans to become a pop-up gallery and want to hear from local artists who would like to display and sell their work at the eatery for a 100% commission rate to the artist.
“If things go to plan, I also would like to expand out into the unit next door and create an artisan bakery, so I can supply the local community with daily fresh bread.” beams, Danny.
