Sonic Arts Week

This July, Sonic Arts Week returns to Middlesbrough and it’s back with a bang!

15th July 2023 - 22nd June 2023

The now famous Sonic Cruise once again teams up with boat operator Rivershack to give audiences a very special cruise on the glorious River Tees. Rivershack’s beautiful boat, Juno, navigates the Tees while the audience can relax and listen to a live soundscape by artist Tim Shaw. Watch and listen as Tim uses floating and underwater speakers to capture the hidden life of our beautiful river.

Throughout the week, Middlesbrough’s Centre Square will play soothing ambient music as a special sound installation. This is an installation by the artist Katie Anderson and is a great way to relax or to take a minute from the busy hustle and bustle of life – the perfect accompaniment to your lunch break.

People out and about can also catch performance artists on the streets of Middlesbrough. On Saturday 15th, Ocean All Over, a troupe of costumed dancers, brass players and DJ’s will sing, dance and perform between Hillstreet Shopping Centre and Captain Cook Square. Not to be missed! Belfast based artist Calm C will also perform in Captain Cook Square throughout the week with a harmonium, once used on the World War One battlefields.

As always, there’ll be Summat for the Bairns. Over 1000 families got creative with these workshops in 2022. Workshops to be held on the Thur 20th Fri 21st & Sun 22nd will encourage youngsters to get creative, making their own listening devices and their own masks.
